Robredo lost all the three Davao provinces in the 2016 vice-presidential elections to Cayetano and Marcos Jr.

She lost the vice-presidential votes in Davao del Norte to her rivals Rep. Allan Peter Cayetano and former Senator Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos Jr., who earned 30% and 50% of the votes, respectively.

Robredo managed to get 10% of the votes. In the adjacent provinces of Davao del Sur and Davao Oriental, her numbers were practically the same with Cayetano and Marcos Jr. similarly snatching the first and second spots.

On April 7, Vice President and presidential aspirant Leni Robredo mustered a significantly huge Kakampink crowd in what many considered Duterte’s bailiwick. More than 35,000 supporters clad in pink, chanted Robredo’s name in unison at Tagum’s New City Hall grounds.

The Leni-Kiko tandem and its senatorial slate were in the region for the second time to grace the invitation of Partido Reporma and its president Pantaleon Alvarez. Robredo can be recalled touring the provinces of Davao del Norte and Davao del Sur last month.

Alvarez, who welcomed the vice-presidentiable onstage gave his constituents some inspirational words. Talking in his native tongue, he urged Davaoeños to choose Leni. “Morning has come. Time to wake up, Mindanao. Let’s go all the way for Leni! he said.

In his speech, the former House Speaker emphasized the nation’s need to have a hardworking and diligent mother, who has a compassionate heart for the people.

Partido Reporma’s endorsement of Robredo came as a surprise last month, as the party previously carried Senator Panfilo Lacson’s presidential campaign. Alvarez was among Robredo’s fiercest critics back then. He later became one of Duterte’s critics after got ousted from House Speakership in 2020.

In her speech, Robredo promised to take care of Davao Region, the same way she cares for her home province. “Ang ipapangako ko po sa inyo, na ‘pag ako binigyan ‘nyo ng pagkakataon, ‘yung pagmamahal ko sa pinanggalingan kong probinsya, pareho din ng pagmamahal ko sa inyo, (What I can promise you, if you will give me a chance, is the same love I have for my home province)” she said.

Through Alvarez and his Partido Reporma, Robredo secured the support of some of the local executives in the region, including Davao del Norte Governor Edwin Jubahib, Tagum City Mayor Allan Rellon, and 11 more town Davao mayors. According to the Commission of Elections, 3.2 million voters are expected to participate in the May 9, 2022, national polls.
