Student regrets graduating as Valedictorian

  • Kyle Martin says that friendships are more important than accomplishments
  • Says having a relationship with Jesus is important

Graduating as a valedictorian is an accomplishment that can only be achieved by a few. But one guy, Kyle Martin, says that he regrets graduating as one.

In his graduation speech, Martin said that it is true that the title made him extremely happy, but only for a moment.

“It felt so good when I heard my name announced with his title….for about 15 seconds”

His heart was rushing and was very excited, but he realized none of this mattered.

“On the sixteenth second, I sat down on my seat and I thought, that’s it?”

The reason he regrets getting given this title is that he sacrificed a lot of relationships to win it. He could’ve advanced his relationships but instead, he was too focused on finishing as the best.

But make no mistake about it, getting to your goal is always important.

“Working hard is good, it is in fact biblical. But it should not be done for the sole purpose of a goal for the sake or at the expense of relationship with others.”

He stresses the importance of relationships, especially those that are significant.

“Have no regrets in the sixteenth second. Nothing is more important than your healthy relationships, nothing”

Relationships give meaning to one’s life. He also said that broken relationships can be mended. All you have to do is take the first step.

“Relationships are where we get to influence, impact, and change people’s lives. Your life cannot be meaningful without them.”

He said he couldn’t have done it without Jesus, his savior.

“I am imploring you, if you have not begun that relationship with Jesus Christ, just do it.”

He also thanked all the parents that sacrificed for their children. He received a standing ovation.
