Woman victim of medical malpractice in Sampaloc, Manila

Netizen Marina Mozo intends on finding justice for her daughter who is an alleged victim of medical malpractice at the Mary Chiles General Hospital in Sampaloc, Manila. Her daughter, Sheryl Mozo Pascua, is currently in a coma after giving birth at the said hospital.

When the time came for her cesarean section operation, the doctors refused to admit Pascua, saying she still had two weeks until she was due. Pascua and her baby were already overdue (which usually entails the need for a cesarean section operation), but doctors insisted she could still give birth normally.

On June 13, Pascua gave birth normally to a baby boy weighing 4.1 kilos and measuring 54 cm long. Because the baby was so large, doctors had to use forceps to bring him out.

Pascua’s obstetrician Dr. Servas also had to cut Pascua’s birth canal so the baby could be removed. However, Servas made a mistake in cutting (which she admitted herself) and this resulted in Pascua experiencing hematoma, a solid swelling of clotted blood within the tissues. Doctors had to do another surgery on Pascua because of the mistake.

Two days later on June 15, during her routine check up, Pascua’s x-ray results revealed she had fluid in her lungs and an enlarged heart. Doctors told her medication would be able to address the problems.

Pascua and her son were discharged on June 17 even though Pascua’s body was still swollen and she had difficulty breathing.

Pascua returned to the hospital on June 20 to have her wound dressings removed from her birth canal. However, during the procedure, Pascua suffered cardiac arrest and her heart stopped beating for about 15 minutes. Pascua was revived, but she had gone into a coma. Her brain had stopped functioning due to the lack of oxygen when her heart stopped beating. Doctors who attended to her said her cardiac arrest was a result of complications from her operation.

Mozo was heartbroken by what happened to her daughter. Mozo said Pascua’s children are currently suffering from the situation. Pascua was a simple woman who worked hard to support her children, one of whom is in elementary and the other, pre-school. Mozo was also requesting the hospital to help them cover their bills since it was her obstetrician’s fault in the first place for having mistakenly cut her daughter’s birth canal.

Mozo posted a plea to netizens for their prayers as well as their support in finding justice for her daughter.

As of this writing, there are still no updates nor a statement from Mary Chiles General Hospital.
