Hard-working deaf woman inspires netizens

Netizen Sarj Mella posted on Facebook an inspiring encounter at SM Manila with a hard-working deaf woman working at the Fruitas Fruit Shake stand.

Mella shared how she did not immediately understand that the woman was deaf so she continued speaking as she placed her order. The Fruitas employee had handed her a card saying, “I’m deaf. My name is Jen.” Mella was accommodated the moment she stepped in front of the stall, despite the fact that the woman could not hear. She was greeted with a smile and a good disposition.

Mella found this very inspiring. She says, “I was just so overwhelmed by the moment because of the fact that she still strives to make a living despite her disability. I even got teary-eyed because [I] can see that she was happy with what she was doing despite her inability to communicate.”

Aside from her admiration for the disabled woman, Mella also praised Fruitas “for giving opportunities to persons with disabilities.”

The Fruitas Group of Companies, led by its president Lester Yu, is proud of its advocacy in equality for the abled and disabled. Yu says his employees are his biggest investment, which is why he has come up with various ways to help them improve their quality of living. Yu is also proud of the fact that he has given jobs to many deaf and mute individuals.

We hope more companies become more open to providing careers and opportunities to other disabled persons. Their disabilities are not liabilities, but rather may even be a guarantee of loyal and hard-working service.
