Get Rid of These Cancer-Causing Items at Home

While cancer has many possible causes, little do we know that some common items found inside our house can potentially cause the dreaded disease. These household items may seem safe, but the carcinogenic chemicals found in them can make your home more dangerous compared to other places.

Protect your family by getting rid of these cancer-causing items at home, based on Herbs Info’s list.

If you have kids, you probably have tons of arts and crafts supplies at home. After all, a child’s creativity must be honed at home. However, some art materials such as permanent markers, acrylic paints and solvents, and certain types of glues may contain carcinogens. Remember to look for art supplies that are non-toxic.

2. Candles

Do you love using scented candles? Some of these candles emit trace amounts of chemicals that can cause cancer. Try using beeswax candles with cotton wicks instead. Never ever buy lead-wick candles as exposure to high amounts of lead can lead to learning disabilities, behavioral problems, hormone disruptions, and other health problems in children. A previous study has also linked it to stomach cancer.

3. Deodorant/ Antiperspirant

To get rid of body door and perspiration, we often put on deodorant or antiperspirant. A study conducted in 2014 revealed the dangers of using these products because of its aluminum content. The aluminum in the deodorant is absorbed by our body and leads to deposits in our breast tissue. This can increase our risk for breast cancer.

4. Plastic Shower Curtains

When a plastic shower curtain with polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is exposed to heat, it releases volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can cause cancer when absorbed by the body. Absorption of VOC may potentially cause damage to our liver, and respiratory, reproductive, and nervous systems. Go for glass doors instead and ditch your plastic shower curtain.

5. Air Fresheners

A study in 2010 linked the use of some air fresheners to the development of breast cancer since it contains VOCs. Aside from cancer, the use of air fresheners has also been linked to asthma and reproductive problems. That’s why it’s recommended to use floral or herbal oils instead of air fresheners.
