Today, March 20 at 5:30 P.M. Philippine Time, the world will experience a once in a lifetime solar eclipse known as the “supermoon”. However, experts are warning selfie-addicts to avoid taking one as it may permanently damage their eyes.
The supermoon which only occurs three times more this century is very rare, many people are actually looking forward to having their selfie taken with it. During this eclipse, the moon will be closest to the Earth, and will be witnessed in “totality” in some places in the world at 9:30 A.M. GMT in March 20, 2015.
Although it is a “total eclipse”, looking at the sun directly may still damage one’s eyes because its radiation can burn the retina. Using a camera and dark eyeglasses may not help lessen the damage too. Daniel Hardiman-McCartney of Britain’s College of Optometrist mentioned that a “selfie” can put one at risk.
Taking a selfie could potentially put you at risk, as you may end up accidentally looking directly at the Sun while aligning yourself and your phone.
