Why do you drool when you sleep?

  • Drooling is a normal part of a person’s sleeping cycle.
  • When one drools in their sleep, it means that they have entered the “deep sleep” phase, which is the most essential part of a person’s rest time.

Sleeping is one of the most important processes for our body to have a productive and active state. All of us need to have a good rest each time our day ends.

Whenever people fail to get a good slumber, it affects our brain in a negative way. Not only that, it also takes a toll on one’s physical health.

But despite the pleasure and the need to get the right amount of sleep, we cannot really be in our bed as long as we please as we need to go out to work or study.

If a person does not sleep enough, they may have fatigue or discomfort in their body, a bad mood, or worse, suffer a health problem due to lack of energy. And this results to the body seeking a new sleep cycle, making you doze off on your desk or in the car.

Every dream has several phases of around equal duration. The main phase is known as Rapid Eye Movement (REM). During this phase, we enter deep sleep and it is usually the start of the “real” rest. By this point, certain neurotransmitters are inhibited to avoid the muscular movements that would make us move in our dreams.

This is also the phase wherein you’ll start drooling.

According to a doctor named Jorge Abel Salinas, the brain shuts off and restores while you rest. This means it will stop swallowing and passing saliva which will turn to the elimination of saliva, hence drooling.

“The adult is completely disconnected, where their brain functions are turned off to achieve a rest and repair. It stops swallowing and pass saliva, then begins to eliminate saliva and gives the famous drooling. Hence, when you rest well, your body relaxes completely and that makes your mouth open and you end up drooling. Far from being something negative, this means that all the processes of your dream are occurring normally.”

So what if you never drool? It may mean that you are not getting sufficient rest and your neurons are not recovering at all.

Don’t be disgusted when you see someone fall alseep and drool. It just means that they are achieving sufficiant sleep. Salinas added,  “One should not be ashamed to drool because it is a natural fact. We just have to be sure that we are breathing correctly and that sleep apnea does not occur (interruption of breathing).”
