Firefighter recalls how he saved Horacio Castillo III from a burning house

  • Firefighter recalls vivid memories with UST hazing victim
  • Lords Hernandez shares how he saved Horacio Castillo III

It is truly unfortunate to hear news about a hardworking student dies because of violence and unprecedented turned of events.

Justice for UST Hazing Victim

After numerous death cases in the past, fraternities took some time off and went low profile. No deaths have been headlined over the years until the heartbreaking case of Horacio ‘Atio’ Castillo III, a freshman Law student of the University of Sto. Tomas.

His lifeless bruised body was allegedly dumped on the streets of Tondo, Manila and pronounced dead at the Chinese General Hospital.

Cruel, inhumane, merciless. Can you think of how much pain Castillo has to endure throughout his so-called frat life? Unimaginable. He may leave the physical world, but all the memories will stay.

Netizen recalls

After it hit the mainstream news, several reports have already been made. And we will not stop there. We need answers, we need names, we need justice.

Just a little breather amidst all the tension revolving the issue, here’s an equally heartbreaking story from a firefighter that once saved Atio’s life from a burning house.

Lords Hernandez shares his brief encounter with the hazing victim way back in 2005. He said that it breaks his heart knowing that the 10-year-old child that he rescued in residential fire ‘became a victim of a fatal hazing’.

“Sabi ko familiar iyong name. Then noong gabi sa ‘TV Patrol,’ nakita ko na si Carmina (Atio’s mother). Doon ko na-confirm,” he said in an interview with ABS-CBN News as to how he found out that it was actually Atio.

At the time, Hernandez was an arson investigator under Paco Fire Station. Castillo family was trapped on the roof deck of their 3-storey home. It was chaotic. The family was saved, thanks to Hernandez’ team.

On keeping the picture

He included a picture of Atio being carried by his team, and Hernandez shared that he kept it for sentimental purposes. The news really broke his heart and wishes justice for the boy he saved 12 years ago.

It pains to know that you saved a person’s life only to be taken away by some cold-blooded culprit. May justice be served with our fallen Atio.
