VIDEO: Did ABS-CBN provide questions to Mar Roxas before debate?

MANILA, Philippines. Liberal party standard bearer Mar Roxas’s good performance during the third Presidential Debate held on Sunday, April 24, at the Phinma-University of Pangasinan in Dagupan City has sparked speculations that his camp was given advance notice by ABS-CBN.

Netizens and several blogsites have alleged Roxas of cheating during the ABS-CBN-hosted PiliPinas Debates 2016. According to them, Roxas delivered scripted answers along with facts and figures to support his statement. They also noticed that the presidential candidate was able to answers within the time frame given.

Others accused ABS-CBN of giving Roxas questions that appear to highlight his good character and reputation.

A video shared by a certain Nylede Flores apparently shows that a written caption of Mar Roxas’s statement was displayed right before he delivered it. The caption “Roxas: Binangga ko ang mga malalaking interes” was flashed on the screen right before Roxas uttered the statement: “Sa karanasan, binabangga ko ang mga malalaking interes…”

The said video has apparently fuelled speculations that the person typing the caption already had Roxas’s replies to the questions beforehand. This implied that Roxas cheated and supposedly secured a copy of the questions before the debate.

“Because how else could the one typing the heads for ABS-CBN know what Mar Roxas was about to say if he or she did not have Mar Roxas’ replies in advance,” journalist Raissa Robles wrote in her blog.

However, the video in question was apparently cut and spliced to make it appear that the person typing knew the caption in advance, giving the impression that Roxas cheated. The first part of Roxas’s statement where he mentions the same line was cut in which he said, “Alam mo, Karen (Davila), sa kasaysayan ko, binangga ko mga malalaking interes.” Since Roxas had already mentioned the same line earlier and the caption for this appeared right before he repeated the same line, the video gave the false impression that the person typing knew Roxas’s answer beforehand.

Roxas added:” Pharmaceutical industry, cheaper medicine law, banking industry at insurance industry, yung pre-need law natin. So sa aking karanasan, binabangga ko ang mga malalaking interes kung ito ay para sa kapakanan ng ordinaryong Pilipino. Wala akong problema doon.”

Robles wrote: “It was clear the post was meant to deceive, provoke and anger a lot of people. Because the first part of Roxas’ sentence was cut away, precisely to give that impression of cheating. You could see the editing was crudely done because the clip did not start at the beginning of the sentence.”
