Public school teacher incurs P800k debt after posting his ID photo on Facebook

MANILA, Philippines. Mark Joseph Lontok, a public school teacher, may be forced to pay P800,000 for loans he did not apply for.

In his interview with GMA 7’s 24 Oras, Lontok revealed that he became a victim of identity theft after posting his Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) ID photo on Facebook. His personal information was allegedly used by an unidentified person to borrow a total of P800,000 in salary loans from three banks. According to Lontok, he did not apply for any of the loans.

“Iyong time na nakapasa ako sa LET (Licensure Examination for Teachers), nag-post po agad ako. Tsaka pagpasok ko po sa public (school), pagbigay ng papel ko, pinost din po sa FB (Facebook) sa sobrang tuwa ko po,” he told 24 Oras.

[It was during the time that I passed LET (Licensure Examination for Teachers) that I posted (my PRC ID photo) immediately. Then when I started working for a public school, I immediately posted the papers I received on Facebook out of excitement.]

As a result, over P9,000 is being deducted from his payroll account monthly which came to him as a surprise since he did not sign any document allowing banks to deduct the said amount from his account. Unfortunately, another bank is set to deduct P10,000 monthly from his account.

A photo of the man who applied for the loan using the public school teacher’s identity  has been submitted by one of the banks.

Atty. Dennis Syhian of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Anti-Fraud and Action Division reminded the public to be more discerning in sharing personal information such as IDs and pictures online.
