Smartphone app uses selfies to calculate your bust size

A new smartphone app can accurately determine the size of your bust just by using two selfies.

Developed by San Francisco-based lingerie company Thirdlove, the software works by taking a snap facing front with the smartphone held at bellybutton height. Another photo should  be taken while facing at a 90 degrees angle. Users must stand in front of a mirror wearing a bra or a tight-fitting top while taking the selfies.

The software then calculates the distance between the body and the mirror using the smartphone as a unit of measurement. Within five minutes, the software can figure out the size of the woman’s body and her bust size.

“In essence, what we are getting is a woman’s overbust, her underbust measurement, and her body shape, which is the same thing a bra fitter gets in a store. We understand how far you are from the mirror based on the size of the phone. It can detect the size of her body in relation to the phone and then we infer a circumference and a body shape from that,” says Heidi Zak, the founder of the company.

According to Thirdlove, users won’t encounter privacy issues as the photos won’t be sent over the internet.

“Your photos are never stored. All of our sizing takes place on your phone. We never view, upload,  or share your photos,” Thirdlove insists.
