LOOK: This restaurant’s social media specialist is a real chicken

“If you think you’ve seen everything, you probably ain’t seen this yet.”

The world is abuzz about this particular poultry restaurant and its odd social media strategy of training an actual hen to take over its Twitter account.

Chicken Treat, an Australian fast food chain, has let Betty, a four-year-old domestic chicken, manage its Twitter account. Birdfeed is first sprinkled over the keyboard before Betty uses her beak to compose a tweet.

According to CBC News, the fowl maybe less qualified for the field than her human counterparts, but people can’t deny the fact that Betty’s more than just a piece of meat. She’s a feathered social media marketing professional who’s been attracting the online world by storm.

To document Betty’s work, Chicken Treat used the hashtag #chickentweet.

The company even released a video featuring their Betty-centric marketing campaign. It revealed that the hen has her own computer in her cage so she can always tell the world whatever is on her mind.

“Betty the chicken is the real deal,” reports CNN. They said that compared to impostors who rely on human interlocutors to actually tweet, “Betty’s down there in Australia doing the hard stuff herself.”

Chicken Treat said that they will continue this practice until Betty successfully tweets a five-letter English word, which will earn her a spot as the first chicken to tweet in the Guinness Book of World Records.

While many netizens were delighted with Betty’s meaningless live updates, the company’s strategy received negative response from animal rights activists, saying, “Chickens don’t tweet, they live tortured lives.”

The chicken company tweeted back explaining that their online campaign has “been approved by the Australian RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) and abides by all standards regarding animal welfare.”

Still, some people believe it’s actually ironic to use an actual chicken to promote the consumption of its own kind. TIME magazine said, “Betty is unwittingly working to promote a firm that exists only to execute and barbecue her brethren for human consumption.”
