Is DepEd allowing the use of beki language in schools?

Should beki language be allowed in schools?

A report by News 5 claimed that beki language or gay lingo can possibly be used as an official medium of instruction in classrooms.

In an interview with News 5, DepEd Assistant Secretary Jesus Mateo said: “Ang layunin ng wika ay para maituro, para makapag-communicate, Kung yung language na yun o yung words na yun ay yun ang maiintindihan ng isang bata, dapat lang naman yung gamitin.”

(The goal of language is to teach, to communicate. If the language or the words can be understood by a student, then we should use it.)

Meanwhile, a report by The Manila Times revealed that Education Secretary Armin Luistro is open to the possibility using beki language if it becomes socially accepted.

(The use of new colloquial terms like gay lingo is part of inevitable evolution of language. If these words become acceptable in our society and is being used by the majority, then that’s the time it will be included in official communication.)

DepEd Chief Misinterpreted by Reporters

On Tuesday, August 11, the Education chief claimed that his statement was misinterpreted by reporters.

“I never said it (gayspeak) will be part of our medium of instruction especially since beki language is not that developed yet,” he said, adding that “gay lingo has yet to be accepted by majority of the population,” he sent via text message to PhilStar.

Moreover, Luistro said that the new K-12 program will address issues such as the growing number of middle class students becoming more fluent in English than in Filipino.
