Indonesia: Veloso’s execution delayed, not cancelled

Attorney General M.Prasetyo said that the execution of Filipina migrant worker Mary Jane Veloso was delayed last minute before her execution as she will testify to help identifying “bigger fish” in smuggling syndicate.

“Veloso will be requested to give information and testimony. We respect legal processes currently conducted in the Philippines. This was why we decided to delay the execution of Veloso’s death sentence. This is a postponement but not a cancellation,” Attorney General M. Prasetyo said as quoted by Antara news agency in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Veloso was spared after a woman who allegedly recruited her to act as a drug courier gave herself up to police in the Philippines on Tuesday.

A member of Veloso’s legal team, Agus Salim, said that they will use the postponement of her execution to prove her innocence.

“Her family were happy” upon knowing she was given a temporary reprieve but knows “this doesn’t mean her execution is cancelled.”

In contradiction to the Indonesian Supreme Court’s agreement that a case review appeal could only be filed once, the team would try to file a third appeal after the investigation of Sergio began.

“We want to prove that she was just a migrant worker who was trafficked and became a drug courier.

“Everyone knows she had no intention [to bring the drugs]. She does not have to be free, we are just trying to find the lightest sentence we can get for her and avoid the death penalty,” Agus said.

Eight people facing drug trafficking charges were executed as scheduled except Veloso early hours on Wednesday on Nusakambangan prison island near Cilacap in Central Java.
