According to research if one spends almost ALL his time on Facebook, Twitter, or any other social media platforms that it completely hinders you from seeing the world and doing more important things, then you are an addict.

“My work revolves around social media.” Okay, let’s define addiction first. It is an obsessive or habitual behavior that often leads to negative results. With that in mind, experts say that social media addicts are deemed those who use Facebook, Twitter, etc for long hours without being productive. Another thing is the dependency in that area that it becomes a damaging habit.

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual For Mental Disorders has another name for it—Internet Addiction Disorder. In fact, it is now included in their list of genuine afflictions found in the most recent publication of the handbook for psychologists.

Why is checking Facebook, twitting, posting daily selfies so addicting? Experts say that socially shy people find their place and confidence in social networking sites. They can be whoever they want to be, anything that feeds their ego or create a self-worth that they do not have in real life. Others however run to this place for self-expression.

Dr. Gerald Shiener, an expert who specializes in addiction psychiatry, says that divulging things about yourself in social media gives you that same sensation as drinking and eating. As quoted, “People gravitate to social media because it’s a way to seem like you’re contacting people while you take no risk. You sit at you computer, people can’t see how you look, people can’t see your tone of voice, whether you’re smiling or not and you can really control what you show — that’s very safe communication.”
