Halloween reveller develops nasty eye infection after wearing zombie-style contact lenses

Revellers planning to wear novelty contact lenses may want to take the horror out of Halloween by doing away with these scary accessories.

A 24-year-old Halloween reveller in the UK developed a nasty eye infection after wearing a set of Zombie-style contact lenses.

Sarah Richards, a beauty therapist, bought the novelty contact lenses for £10 which she wore during her friend’s party. Apparently, Richards, who admitted to having a few drinks that night, fell asleep wearing the lenses.

She woke up the next day in absolute agony and discomfort because of the contact lenses. Richards even had to scrape the lenses just to get them out.

Richards recounted: “I had to physically prise my eyes apart. I could only see a tiny bit of light when I finally did open my eyes.”

Fearing that the novelty lenses caused permanent damage to her eyes, Richards went to an NHS (National Health Service) drop-in center to have her eyes checked. She was given eye drops and an eye bath and was advised not to wear lenses or any makeup. They also told her to refrain from straining her eyes.

“My pupils were scratched and sore and just felt raw, like they had been covered in grit,” Richards revealed.

Because of the ordeal, Richards was not able to work for a week.

Dr. David Allamby, a leading laser eye surgeon, revealed that improper wearing of novelty contact lenses can lead to ulcer, eye infection, and even blindness.

“Decorative contact lenses need to be treated in the same way as prescription contact lenses – you need to have thorough guidance in how to use them along with a plan for follow-up care,” Allamby added.
