Dog ‘breastfeeds’ abandoned, malnourished child

Here’s an incredible example of maternal instinct. A dog named Reina is being hailed as a savior after apparently sustaining the life of an abandoned two-year-old human boy.

The boy, half-clothed and already in a dangerous state of malnutrition, was rescued by policemen in the desert port of Arica in Chile. Witnesses called in the police to investigate the site, a mechanic’s workshop, when they realized that along with her litter of puppies, the neighborhood dog Reina was also caring for a human boy.

It can’t be determined for certain when the boy was abandoned, but it is clear that he would have died had the dog not taken him in with her litter and nursed him with her own milk.

Police Captain Diego Gajardo told local media that, “Police were called to verify the witness’s report, noting the obvious state of malnutrition of the child and verifying that he was drinking milk from a canine that was in the area, so he was moved immediately to a hospital.”

At the hospital, a woman claiming to be the child’s mother showed up drunk, but charges were not filed against her as there was no physical harm done to the boy. Child services, however, has taken charge of the boy pending custody hearings scheduled for later this month.
