WATCH: Doctors use basil leaves to remove worm from teenage boy’s eye

Who would have thought that basil leaves can be used to remove a worm from a teenage boy’s eye?

A 17-year-old boy from Pozuzo, Peru arrived at the Children’s Hospital in Lima with a swollen left eye. Initially the doctors thought it was a simple inflammation so they prescribed him medicines which failed to work.

After performing an MRI scan to determine what was causing the swelling, the doctors were shocked to discover a worm larvae living inside the teenage boy’s face.

However, the doctors opted to use basil leaves instead of performing surgery on the boy to remove the worm measuring 3 cm in length and half a cm wide.

The horrific video shows ophthalmologist Carolina Marchena luring the creature out of the boy’s eye using a bunch of basil leaves since it is attracted to its smell.

When the worm emerged, Dr. Machena and her medical assistants used tweezers to extract the creature which is believed to be a larvae of a human botfly mosquito.

Speaking to AFP, Dr. Machena revealed that it was the first case wherein doctors were able to extract larvae without the use of surgery.

“We are astonished because it is unheard of to have been able to remove the larvae without any surgery,” she said.

According to Dr. Machena, the worm had been living inside the boy’s face for a month. The worm posed serious risks on the teenage boy’s health as it had buried itself in the sensitive part of the face known as the “triangle of death”. Infections on this part can potentially spread to brain.
