Poor Endangered Cockatoos Stuffed in Plastic Bottles For Smuggling

SURABAYA, Indonesia — Yellow-crested endangered cockatoos were found stuffed inside plastic bottles at the Port of Tanjung Perak. The poor birds were crammed alive by a smuggler in the plastic bottles for illegal trade.

According to Metro, the beautiful yellow-crested birds are already endangered with only less than 7,000 remaining in Surabaya, and can be sold for up to £650 each.

NBC News reports that a man was responsible for trying to smuggle the critically endangered cockatoos. The plastic bottles stuffed with the birds were found inside sack-like bags. Twenty-two birds were identified as yellow-crested birds and one of them was a green parrot.

The unidentified man carried the bags with the stuffed birds on May 4, 2015 when custom officials inspected the passenger ship named Tidar.

The birds were already rescued and freed from the plastic bottles.
