GK Founder alleged of delivering a “sexist speech” releases a statement

Gawad Kalinga (GK) founder Tony Meloto who allegedly delivered a “sexist” speech released a statement on Tuesday, May 26, 2015, to address the allegations. Meloto was invited to speak at the University of Hawaii-Center for Philippine Studies (UH-CPS) anniversary last April 11. However, the UH-CPS released a statement through their Facebook Page criticizing and disavowing Meloto’s speech.

Meloto stated that his statements were taken out of context and his metaphors were given a negative interpretation.

In an official statement released through the GK Global headquarters, Meloto stated he was “shocked” by the negative statement released by the UH-CPS 45 days after the event.

Meloto said he is deeply pained about what was written about him, citing that he has delivered hundreds of speeches in the Philippines and abroad. He mentioned that he has always cared for the poor, has protected women and children, and has promoted the Filipino pride everywhere he has gone in the last 20 years. He also said that he thought his speeches where well-received and there was no negative response from the  public, but just a lot of picture-taking and coffee, and an invitation to another big event in Hawaii in August.

Meloto also clarified about what UH-CPS stated that he was promoting Filipina women to foreigners, saying that he just candidly shared about foreigners finding the Philippines as the land of opportunity, a hub for social entrepreneurs, and the most beautiful country in Asia, including its women. He said he just cited his daughters as examples and did not mean any insult to them. He stated he had the highest respect for Filipino women.

Meloto disproves accusations of having colonial mentality, being an elitist, and a sexist

Meloto first disproved being accused of having a colonial mentality by stating he takes pride in being a Filipino and in his brown color. He said he promotes world-class Filipino brands and services through social entrepreneurship. He stated that this will help create inclusive wealth to Filipinos that does not leave the poor behind.

Meloto then went on to say he is not an elitist as he spends his days with the least privileged. He, however, stated that GK partners with different institutions and agencies, local and international, since GK’s work is massive and that it needs the most help it can get. He also mentioned that bringing in rich schools and corporations to help the poor does not make him an elitist.

On being accused as a “sexist”, Meloto said that it was the first time he was called as such. He even cited that he works for the protection of women and children against domestic abuse and social discrimination. He mentioned that GK is strict at disciplining the men in the communities as well. He stated that Filipino women are the country’s biggest blessing because of their caring and nurturing nature.

On a final note, Meloto said that the UH-CPS issue has taught him valuable lessons. He also encouraged everyone to use the social media to create a positive change. He hopes that his statement will clarify the issue and help everyone get back on track as there is much work to be done.
